Long Weekend 2027 in Lithuania: When to Take Time Off and How Many Days of Vacation to Take

In 2027, there will be four long weekends in Lithuania: January 1–3, March 27–29, October 30–November 2, and December 24–26. Not many. However, several holidays fall on a Tuesday or Thursday, so a single day off can easily turn into four consecutive days off.

January: Ten Days Off for Five Days of Vacation Time

New Year’s Day in 2027 falls on a Friday, so January 1–3 will be a classic weekend: you can leisurely finish off your holiday salads and pretend you’ve already made plans for the year. Take vacation from January 4 through 8—Monday through Friday—and you’ll have ten consecutive days off, from January 1 through 10. January 6 isn’t a holiday in Lithuania, so don’t count on it. You’ll have to use all five days from your vacation allowance.

Spring: February, March, and Easter

February

Restoration of the State of Lithuania Day, February 16, falls on a Tuesday in 2027. A Tuesday in the middle of the week is a day of questionable productivity, so take Monday, February 15, off. You’ll get four consecutive days off, from February 13 through 16, using just one vacation day.

March

Lithuanian Independence Restoration Day, March 11, falls on a Thursday. Take Friday, March 12, off and enjoy a four-day weekend from March 11 through 14. Again, just one vacation day for four days off.

Easter

Easter in 2027 is on March 28, and Easter Monday is on the 29th. Including Saturday, that makes for three days off, from March 27 through 29. Add vacation days from Tuesday, March 30, through Friday, April 2, and you’ll have nine consecutive days off, from March 27 through April 4. Four vacation days turn into nine.

May and August: Not So Lucky

May 1, 2027, falls on a Saturday, and August 15 (Žolinės, Assumption Day) falls on a Sunday. In Lithuania, a holiday that falls on a weekend is not moved to a weekday, so there are no bonus days off. That said, May is a great time for your first outing into nature. Take Friday or Monday from your vacation and kick off the picnic season.

Summer: Jonines and Mindaugas Day

Jonines

June 24, Ros and Jonines (Ivan’s Day), falls on a Thursday. Take Friday, June 25, off and enjoy a break from June 24 through 27. Four days is plenty of time for a bonfire, a wreath, and a search for the fern flower—which, as we all know, no one has ever found.

Mindaugas Day

July 6, State Day (the coronation of King Mindaugas), falls on a Tuesday. Take Monday, July 5, off, and you’ll have four days off, from July 3 through 6.

Both periods fall in the middle of the high season, and accommodations for these dates sell out quickly. It’s best to book a place by the sea in advance, before the best options are gone.

Fall: The Most Generous Long Weekend of the Year

November 1 (All Saints’ Day) in 2027 falls on a Monday, and November 2 (Vėlinės, All Souls’ Day) falls on a Tuesday. Together with Saturday and Sunday, this makes for four days off, from October 30 through November 2, without having to use a single vacation day. If you take Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday—November 3–5—as well, the break will stretch to nine days, from October 30 to November 7. For many, these days are also a time to visit loved ones at the cemetery, so you can split your vacation between family matters and the trip.

December: Kūčios and Christmas

December 24, Kūčios, falls on a Friday in 2027, while December 25 and 26 fall on Saturday and Sunday. That makes for three days off. Take vacation from December 27 through 31—Monday through Friday—and you’ll have ten consecutive days off, from December 24 through January 2.

How to Best Allocate Your 20 Days of Vacation

All the favorable “long weekends” in 2027 add up to 21 days of vacation, but with a five-day workweek, you only have 20 days. You’re one day short, so you’ll have to cut one day from your vacation. Below are two ways to schedule your vacation, depending on what you prefer: frequent mini-vacations or one long vacation.

Option 1: Eight mini-vacations a year

Here, vacation time is scheduled only around holidays. In January, take January 5 through 8—four days: you’ll have to work on Monday, January 4, but you’ll have time off from January 1 through 3 and from January 5 through 10. Then, take one day off to create “long weekends”: February 15 gives you time off from February 13 through 16, and March 12 gives you time off from March 11 through 14. For Easter, take four days off—from March 30 through April 2—and you’ll have nine consecutive days off, from March 27 through April 4. You’ll also need one day each for the summer: June 25 gives you a break from June 24 through 27, and July 5 gives you a break from July 3 through 6. In the fall, take three days off—from November 3 to 5—and enjoy nine consecutive days off, from October 30 to November 7. To wrap up the year, take five days off—from December 27 through 31—for ten consecutive days off, from December 24 through January 2.

In total, 20 vacation days provide eight blocks and 53 days off. Each vacation day results in more than two and a half days off from work.

Option 2: One Long Summer Vacation

If mini-vacations don’t suit you and you want a full summer, combine two summer holidays into one. Take June 25 off, then June 28 through July 2, and July 5 as well—seven days total. This gives you 13 consecutive days off, from June 24 through July 6, with both Jonines and Mindaugas Day falling within a single vacation period. The remaining days are distributed as follows: January (January 5–8, four days), one day each for the February and March long weekends, four days for Easter, and three days in November. A total of 20 days. December will have to stay as is: only the holidays from December 24–26 will remain. Together with the holidays from December 24–26, this will result in seven blocks totaling 51 days off, with one of them stretching for nearly two weeks.

So, which option should you choose?

If you like to get out of the house often, go with the first option: eight trips a year, and you won’t have time to get bored with any of them. If you need a week off just to stop thinking about work, the second option is more reliable. Four days at the coast offer a break, while thirteen days offer a vacation.

This calculation is based on a standard five-day workweek and 20 working days of vacation per year. If you have a rotating schedule, you’ll need to calculate it differently. Before submitting your request, check your company’s vacation schedule.

Where to Go

Lithuania is plenty for three or four days. On the coast, it’s worth visiting Palanga, Nida, and Šventoji for the sea air and pine forests. Druskininkai and Birštonas are ideal for spas and therapeutic treatments. In Aukštaitija and Žemaitija National Parks, you can stay at rural tourism estates. If you want the freedom to plan your own itinerary, it’s easier to rent a car—that way, you won’t have to adjust to bus schedules.

You can also take a four-day trip to Europe: from the airports in Vilnius and Kaunas, it’s easy to reach Warsaw, Prague, Vienna, Berlin, Milan, or Stockholm. It’s best to check for direct flights in advance. Nine to ten days—for example, during Easter or in November—are ideal for a trip farther afield: to Spain, Italy, Greece, or the Canary Islands.

Plan Ahead

Airlines and hotels adjust their prices based on demand, and demand always rises during holiday periods. The sooner you buy your tickets and book your accommodations, the better your chances of avoiding overpaying. Here’s another reason not to wait: vacation schedules at work are often coordinated on a “first come, first served” basis. Check your dates against the calendar while your coworkers are still figuring out where they’ll spend their Yonines.
