Where to take construction waste in Lithuania: rules and limits

Construction waste cannot be thrown into a regular container - a fine from 30 €. We tell you where to hand over waste for free under the DGASA limit, the addresses of sites in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda, and when you need a container or a Big Bag.

They made repairs - and now a mountain of old tiles, drywall trimmings and dismantled window frames are lying at the entrance. Throwing all this into an ordinary household container is a bad idea: it is forbidden to accept construction waste in them in Lithuania, and the fine for violation starts from 30 euros. In case of repeated violation or unloading of garbage in nature, the amount grows to 1000 euros, and the offending car can be confiscated. Let's figure out how to get rid of construction waste legally and without extra expenses.

What is considered construction waste

Before taking waste to the site, it is worth sorting it - different categories are accepted in different sections.

Inert materials include concrete, bricks, ceramic tiles, plaster and roof tiles.

Finishing and structural waste - plasterboard, old wooden and plastic windows, doors, parquet, laminate, linoleum, as well as dismantled plumbing - sinks, toilets, bathtubs.

Packaging from building materials - cement bags, cardboard, protective film, foam - are also transported separately.

But asbestos-containing slate, glass wool, mineral wool, residues of varnishes, paints, adhesives and solvents are classified as hazardous waste, and a special conversation with them is discussed below.

Minor repairs: DGASA platforms

If the renovation has affected one apartment, the easiest option is to take the garbage yourself to the bulky waste collection sites, DGASA (Didelių gabaritų atliekų surinkimo aikštelės). They are managed by regional waste management centers (RATC), and within the annual limit, the delivery is free.

The limit depends on the region: usually, from 250 to 500 kg of construction waste per year is accepted for free per resident or household.

At the entrance, you will need an identity card — a Lithuanian ID card or a residence permit: the employee weighs the car before and after unloading and records the change in a single system. If the limit is exceeded, you will have to pay for extra kilograms — usually at a rate of about 0.10–0.15 €/kg.

The sites operate in all municipalities of the country.

  • In Vilnius (operator VAATC) people accept Pilaitės pr. 50, Pramonės g. 209S, Liepkalnio g. 113B, V. A. Graičiūno g. 36C and Pumpėnų g. 10.
  • In Kaunas (Kauno RATC) — on Raudondvario pl. 155D, Kuršių g. 9E, Chemijos g. 4E, Vandžiogalos pl. 92B and Energetikų g. 60.
  • In Klaipėda (KRATC) – at Šiaurės pr. 30, Tilžės g. 66A and Plieno g. 13.

Please note that the schedule of the venues is not the same: many are closed on Sundays and Mondays, but open on Saturdays.

When there is a lot of garbage: containers and big bags

Major repairs with the dismantling of walls or ceilings will definitely not cover the DGASA limit - here you need a private removal service. Big Bags are convenient for medium-scale repairs: a durable polypropylene bag with a volume of 1 m³ can withstand up to 1-1.5 tons. It is filled near the house, and then the company's manipulator takes the bag in its entirety.

If the count is in tons, it makes sense to order a metal container with a volume of 6-10 m³ - the company brings it to the site, leaves it for a few days and then takes it away for processing.

Please note: to install a container on municipal land - a street, sidewalk, public parking - you may need permission from the municipality. And if there is simply no one to take out the garbage on their own, you can order a team with a minibus or dump truck, which will take everything on a turnkey basis.

Asbestos and slate: a special procedure

Old slate and other asbestos-containing materials are dangerous with asbestos dust, so they are handled differently.

It is categorically impossible to mix asbestos slate with concrete or brick - it must be packed separately, in an airtight film or bags.

The limits for free donation are stricter here - usually up to 200-500 kg per year, depending on the region, and such garbage is accepted not at any DGASA site, but only where the reception of hazardous waste is equipped.

What to check before starting work

Estimate the volume in advance: up to 300-400 kg of garbage can be removed gradually by a car with a trailer, but during major repairs, it is better to immediately budget for a Big Bag or a container of 6-8 m³ - otherwise waste will accumulate in the apartment or in the yard.

Sort concrete, wood, plastic, and hazardous materials separately from each other and take your passport or residence permit with you — without a document, they will not accept you at the site.

It is convenient to view the current limits and the nearest site on a single portal atliekos.lt — there is an interactive map.

For your region, you can also look at the operator's website:

The easiest way to find a pick-up service with loading or container rental is among the ads of masters and repair companies.
