If you want to taste the dishes of a dozen countries in one day, listen to national music and buy something handmade, in September you should go to the Fair of Peoples in Vilnius. This is one of the liveliest city festivals of autumn: part of the streets of the center turns into a stage, a market and a food court at the same time. It is suitable for adults, families with children, and tourists who are passing through Vilnius and want to see the city not only "from a postcard".
In Lithuanian, the holiday is called "Tautų mugė", and it is far from an ordinary trade fair. The idea is to bring together the national communities that live in Lithuania and neighboring countries in one place and let them show their cuisine, crafts and music. The organization is usually organized by the Vilnius city administration together with representatives of the diasporas.
Over the years, the program has been attended by the Tatar, Polish, Russian, Jewish, Karaite and Roma communities, as well as guests from Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine. The composition changes a little each time, but the essence remains: this is not a souvenir market, but rather a street festival of cultures, where food and crafts are just an excuse to get together and communicate.
In 2026, the holiday was held on September 18-20 - traditionally, this is the end of the week, Friday-Sunday.
The dates are a little different every year, but the landmark is the same: mid or second half of September, usually coincides with the season of city festivals like Vilnius City Fiesta. Before the trip, it is still worth checking the current poster - the start times of individual concerts and master classes differ in different years.
The festival occupies not one site, but several points in the historical center at once: Gedimino prospektas, Lukiškių aikštė and V. Kudirkos aikštė, as well as adjacent streets. In fact, this entire section of the center turns into a single space of the fair for the weekend - somewhere shopping stalls, somewhere a stage with concerts, somewhere a food court.
It is more convenient to get there by public transport: during the event, temporary traffic restrictions are often introduced in the center, and there are usually no free parking lots nearby by lunchtime.
The gastronomic part is what many people go to the fair for. On the shelves, dishes of European, Ukrainian, Caucasian and Central Asian cuisines, homemade cheeses, pastries and farm products coexist. The specific set of dishes is different every year - it depends on which communities and producers will come - so you should not count on one thing in advance.
In parallel with food, there are rows with handicrafts - ceramics, jewelry, textiles, wooden products, souvenirs with a national flavor. Many things are made by small family workshops, which on ordinary days are sold through marketplaces or social networks, and an offline showcase is brought to the fair.
Folklore ensembles and dance groups of different communities usually perform on stage, sometimes modern performers. It is convenient to see the schedule of concerts in advance if you are going specifically for the performance of a particular group.
The kostav of the participants changes from year to year, but usually in the program you can find the Ukrainian, Polish, Belarusian, Armenian, Tatar, Greek and Georgian communities, as well as the cultures of Central Asia. It is in this mixture that the meaning of the holiday lies: in one day it is possible to go "in a circle" around several cuisines and traditions, without leaving the city center.
In addition to shopping arcades, the program usually includes concerts, national dances, processions, master classes and individual activities for children. In some years, thematic cultural projects are added to the fair - then the program turns out to be much wider than the standard set of "food plus music". It is always better to look at the exact list of activities closer to the date on the official resources of the event.
There is also something to do with children at the fair: even preschoolers usually like music and dancing, plus you can try unusual food and see how the masters work. Some sites offer children's workshops, so it is better to look at the schedule for families in advance — otherwise you risk simply not having time.
We will not guess what specific dishes will be brought this year, but according to the experience of previous years, the fair usually has national pastries, cheeses and meat products, sweets, unusual drinks and dishes that you will not find in ordinary restaurants in Vilnius.
Practical advice: if you want to try several cuisines in one visit, it is better not to take a large portion of one dish at once - there is one stomach, and there are many counters. Leave room for other dishes.
Souvenirs, jewelry, ceramics, woodwork, textiles and natural products are most often taken from the goods - in general, everything that is good for yourself and as a gift. By the way, if you yourself make something similar with your hands, sell farm products or provide services for the home and holidays, such goods and services - during the season of autumn fairs, usually raises interest in such offers.
It is better to go in the morning or in the first half of the day - by the evening there are noticeably more people. For the concerts of interest, it is worth looking at the start time in advance, take comfortable shoes: you will have to walk a lot and mainly on cobblestones. A small bag or backpack, cash mixed with a map and a pre-thought-out option where to park if you are still by car will not hurt. It is useful to agree on a meeting place with children in advance in case you get lost in the crowd - with so many people, this is not uncommon.
There is no need for an unequivocal "yes" or "no" here: this is a good reason to get acquainted with several cultures at once, a convenient format for a family walk and a godsend for those who love food and crafts. Plus, the route is easy to combine with a walk through the Old Town - it is literally a couple of steps from the fair sites to it.
