After more than one hundred years spent as part of other states, Lithuania declared itself an independent democratic republic. The Act signed on February 16, 1918 became an expression of the will of the nation and its political maturity. This date is considered the foundation of modern Lithuanian statehood and national identity.
Today, celebrations traditionally take place in the city of Vilnius and other cities across Lithuania: official ceremonies, concerts, exhibitions, educational events, and national marches are organized.

The Lithuanian coat of arms, Vytis (a mounted knight on horseback), symbolizes the defense of the homeland and the historical strength of the state. On this festive day, these symbols can be seen everywhere — on buildings, clothing, shop windows, and city squares.

On February 16, the Lithuanian national flag is raised not only at official institutions but also at private homes, schools, and offices. For many families, this has become a beautiful tradition — starting the day by raising the flag as a sign of respect for history and the state.

Such items are often used during the celebration and remain as symbols of respect for Lithuania’s history.
Restoration of the State of Lithuania Day is not only a historical date, but also a living reminder of the value of freedom, independence, and civic responsibility. It unites different generations, strengthens national identity, and inspires the preservation of Lithuania’s cultural and historical heritage.
February 16 is a day when Lithuania’s past, present, and future merge into one strong patriotic feeling.
